Festone di San Biagio

The "Festone di S. Biagio" takes place in Scrofiano on February 3rd and it is a festival in honor of the patron saint. During this recurring event, ladies and princes parade through the streets of the historic district carrying the "mazza", a trophy holding the statuette of the patron Saint Biagio on top of an octagonal dome. The decorative structure below the statuette is made by the women of the village with a flour-and-egg-based dough and takes the forms of various objects relating to martyrdom of Bishop San Biagio such as small snakes, grids, combs, flowers, miter, pastoral staffs and a sow (“scrofa” in italian) - symbol of the village - which is traditionally donated by the president of the organizing committee. The "mazza" must be ready by the morning of February 2nd, when it is blessed in the Collegiate Church. The event ends on February 3 with the distribution of the blessed dough forming in the "mazza".
