Pieve di San Giovanni Battista

The church of San Giovanni Battista is a Catholic place of worship, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
The building, dating back to 1392, has undergone various alterations over time, such as in 1869 by Count De Gori and in 1895 by the Ferrari family. It is bordered externally by the angular bell tower and by the sixteenth-century portal in travertine. The interior, initially with a vault with visible beams, now has a nave vault with a plant characterized by an asymmetrical layout. The church consists of the high altar and two chapels: the Rosary chapel with the baptismal font and the Madonna delle Nevi chapel. Behind the altar is a small choir. On two niches there are two polychrome wooden statues by Francesco di Valdambrino representing the Annunciation: Angel of the Annunciation and Virgin of the Annunciation. The Historical-Statutory Monograph of the Castle of Farnetella of 1901 by Adolfo Ferrari attributes to the Virgin of the Annunciation phenomena of tearing and miraculous healings relating to a period of 1700. These statues, initially considered of very little artistic value, were subsequently found to be of considerable value due to the fact that the 1949 restoration highlighted their belonging to the prestigious Sienese school of the first half of the 15th century. In the church there is a sacred garment of damask cloth from the 16th century with very precious and rich silver flowers. The first parish priest or rector of the parish church was Stefano Salvi who had the chapel of the Rosary built together with the cavalier Francesco Bindi Sergardi. The second rector was the Farnetellese Pietro Giovagnoli.
